GMC: 7265291
Location: Freeman Hospital, Newcastle
Mr Benjamin Cosway is a Consultant Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Surgeon with more than a decade of specialist surgical experience. He is fully trained in all aspects of ENT care and has advanced subspecialist expertise in voice disorders, airway management, and head, neck and thyroid lumps. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, he is the Clinical Lead of The Newcastle Voice & ENT Clinic, where he provides personalised, evidence-based treatment using the latest diagnostic technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Mr Cosway regularly receives referrals for complex voice, airway and head & neck problems from across the North of England. He is the only surgeon in the North East with dual expertise in laryngology and head, neck and thyroid disorders, and his national reputation in voice care is reflected in his role as the laryngology representative for the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM), an organisation that supports professional performers in maintaining and optimising their vocal health.
As a singer with extensive performance experience, he understands the unique demands placed on the professional voice. He has performed alongside elite singers across the UK as part of Newcastle’s Voice of the Town Choir, including national stadium tours with Take That at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium and Birmingham Arena, as well as appearances in London’s West End at the London Palladium. This rare combination of specialist medical training and real-world performing insight allows him to expertly support a wide range of patients — from touring vocalists, theatre actors and broadcasters to anyone concerned about their voice or throat symptoms.
Mr Cosway also treats the full spectrum of head & neck and thyroid disorders, including thyroid lumps, nodules and compression symptoms, as well as problems affecting the throat, voice box and salivary glands. His surgical practice includes advanced, minimally invasive approaches designed to optimise outcomes.
Nationally, Mr Cosway plays a leading role in shaping ENT and head & neck care. He co-authored the latest UK Head & Neck Cancer Guidelines and leads the UK’s advanced national training programme for future head & neck surgeons. At Newcastle Hospitals, he has transformed pathways for day-case major neck surgery and championed the development of one-stop neck lump clinics in areas of high deprivation, improving patient access, convenience and equity of care.
